How do I obtain a dealer license in Nebraska?
In order to obtain a Nebraska dealer license you will need to take 8 hours of Motor Vehicle Industry Licensing Board approved training, obtain a bond & insurance, get a sales tax license & tax id number, have a location that meets zoning requirements, and most dealers will register with the Secretary of State. What are the new dealer license education requirements in Nebraska?
LB484 is now state law and went into effect on January 1, 2026. LB484 requires 8 hours of pre-license training and 4 hours of annual continuing education every year. The Motor Vehicle Industry Licensing Board requires 4 of the 8 hours of pre license training to be taken in person and 4 hours can be viewed via online video. Any currently licensed dealer that previously completed a Board webinar can take our 2 hour continuing ed course. The Board allows currently licensed dealers to take all 4 hours or all 2 hours of continuing education training entirely online.
Are the Automobile Dealer Training Association courses approved by the Board?
Yes, the Automobile Dealer Training Association courses are approved by the Nebraska Motor Vehicle Industry Licensing Board. The 8 hour pre-license course, 4 hour continuing ed course, and 2 hour continuing ed courses have been vetted and approved by the Board. The courses meet the state's new mandated dealer license education requirements.

However, the 4 hour portion of the pre license training is held in Omaha, Lincoln, North Platte, South Sioux City, and Nebraska City. I am a currently licensed Nebraska dealer, how do I renew my license?
Nebraska State Law now requires licensed dealers to take 4 hours of continuing education every year before you can renew your dealer license. The continuing education course can be completed by viewing a series of online videos. What dealers are exempt from the new Nebraska dealer education requirements?
According to the Nebraska Statute 60-1408, franchised new car dealers, any employee of a franchised new car dealer, dealers whose primary business is the sale of salvage vehicles on behalf of motor vehicle insurers, dealers who exclusively sell manufactured homes, or dealers who exclusively sell trailers are exempt from the new training requirements. Dealers that sell both motor vehicles and trailers are required to complete the training.

How much does a Nebraska dealer license cost?
The initial application and licensing fee for a Nebraska motor vehicle or trailer dealer is $250. If you change your dealership location within the same city or county limits, you are not required to get a new license, but you must pay a $100 location change fee and pass a new facility inspection. Your bond price is based on your credit score and your insurance is based on several factors but mainly your driving record. Yes. Your Nebraska dealer license will allow you to enter Nebraska dealer auctions and every other dealer auction in the United States. The State of Nebraska issues several different types of dealer licenses including a Motor Vehicle Dealer's License when selling motor vehicles, a Motorcycle Dealer's License when selling motorcycles, a Trailer Dealer's License when selling only trailers, a Supplemental License for additional dealership locations, a Finance Company License for buy here pay here dealers, a Wrecker Or Salvage Dealer License to sell salvage vehicle parts, and Motor Vehicle Auction Dealer's License to open a motor vehicle auction.
How do I meet the dealer Secretary of State, Sales Tax License, and Tax ID number requirements?
We will cover this process extensively in your pre-license class. If you are not comfortable with this process we also provide a discount code to a third party provider that will register your business with the Nebraska Secretary of State, obtain your sales tax license, and tax id for you at a minimal cost. This can be done in just a few moments. Either way we will make it as easy as possible.
What type of insurance do I need for a Nebraska dealer license?
Dealers in Nebraska must carry liability insurance covering "Any Auto" or "All Owned Autos" according to Nebraska Statutes §60-534 and §60-538. The minimum requirements are at least $25,000 for bodily injury/death of one person, $50,000 for bodily injury/death of two or more persons in a single accident, and $25,000 for property damage.
How much does the insurance cost?
The cost of the insurance required to get a Nebraska dealer license is determined on your driving record, your dealership ownership experience, the number of dealer plates you are issued, your geographic area, and the number of drivers on your dealership policy. In your course we will do our best to assist you in finding the lowest quotes. We also provide links in your dealer course to insurance agents that specialize in insuring Nebraska dealers.
What amount of dealer surety bond is required for a Nebraska dealer license?
A standard Nebraska dealer license requires a $50,000 dealer surety bond. If you are applying for an auction dealer license to open a motor vehicle auction, the required bond amount is $100,000. We will assist you with your bond in the in person portion of your pre-license training course and provide bond quoting links in the online training courses as well.
How much does a Nebraska dealer surety bond cost?
The price of your dealer surety bond is based on your credit score. Using the bond broker service we provide may allow you to obtain the cheapest bonds by submitting your bond to the bond carrier that specializes in issuing bonds to dealers with your credit score. When using a bond broker and your credit score is over 690 your bond should cost about $500 per year or $50 per month for 10 months. If your credit is 660-689 your bond should cost about $750 per year of $75 per month for 10 months. If your credit score is below 600 your bond prices may start as low as $1500 per year or $150 per month for 10 months. We have bond carriers that specialize in issuing bonds for dealers with low credit scores. Our bond carriers allow monthly payments on all bonds which should increase your credit score and lead to a cheaper bond pricing when you are renewing your license.
Can I finance and make payments on my bond if I have less than perfect credit?
Yes, bond payments start as low as $50 per month with good credit, $150 per month with below average credit. If your credit score is below 500 we can help you find low monthly payment plans that may build your credit score leading to lower bond pricing when you renew your Nebraska dealer license. We will show you how in your pre-license training class.
I have bad credit, shouldn't I just avoid getting a Nebraska dealer license because of the high price of the bond?
No. We strongly encourage you to obtain your bond no matter your credit score and make monthly payments. Your profits with a Nebraska dealer license should be much more than your monthly bond payments, regardless of your credit score. Bond payments are typically only a fraction of your monthly dealer income. Based on our experience, individuals with poor credit who obtain a dealer license often see a significant improvement in their credit score within a year. This is typically driven by the substantial increase in income from operating their dealership, along with the monthly payments made on their dealer bond.
Can you tell me more about the course instructor?
Your dealer course is conducted by Automobile Dealer Training Association Lead Instructor Delus Johnson. Instructor Johnson was born in Falls City, Nebraska and currently works out of Omaha. He is a former dealership principle, a 20 year veteran fire department captain, and was elected to House of Representatives from 2011 to 2019. During his time in the House his colleagues elected him to the Leadership position of House Whip. He has held the position of Lead Instructor of the Automobile Dealer Training Association since 2009. Instructor Johnson has conducted over 1,200 in person dealer training classes and trained over 20,000 dealers online. He conducts the pre-license training classes in Omaha, Lincoln, North Platte, South Sioux City, and Nebraska City in person. Instructor Johnson will lead you step by step through the entire dealer startup process.
